Species / Key issue: Moroccan Spiny-tailed Lizard (Uromastyx nigriventris) – understudied species, subject to pressures (capture/trade), requiring data and conservation methodologies.
Location: Morocco (partner sites and/or facilities) + captive environment comparisons.
Status: Ongoing.
To develop behavioral monitoring tools (e.g., accelerometers) to better understand activity patterns and spatial use, compare captive environments, and improve husbandry conditions for the rehabilitation and release of confiscated individuals when appropriate.
Development of a low-impact sensor attachment methodology.
Data collection on activity and movement patterns.
Production of an algorithm for behavioral interpretation (activity, rest, thermoregulation, displacement).
Recommendations to enhance husbandry and enclosure design.
Preparation for future application of these tools on wild individuals (comparison and conservation).
Animals monitored
Data collected / recording hours
Improvement of welfare parameters (e.g., normal activity, shelter use)
Recommendations implemented
Staff/students trained in protocols
Animals rehabilitated and monitored post-release
