National Action Plan for the Puff Adder in Morocco

Species / Key issue: Puff Adder (Bitis arietans) – isolated and threatened (VU) Moroccan populations, highly restricted range, threats from illegal collection and human pressures.
Location: Morocco (areas concerning isolated populations).
Status: Ongoing (commencing with a planning workshop).

General Objective

To develop a Conservation Action Plan for the Puff Adder in Morocco, based on a shared vision, priority actions, and a budgeted operational plan.

Key Actions

  • Organization of a participatory planning workshop (CPSG/IUCN approach): diagnostics, threats, objectives, and actions.

  • Definition of a shared vision and a logical framework (objectives, results, indicators).

  • Identification of priority actions: reduction of poaching/collection, population monitoring, awareness-raising, management framework, etc.

  • Construction of an operational action plan and a budget.

  • Stakeholder engagement (scientists, authorities, civil society, cultural/tourism actors depending on context).

Impact Indicators

  • 20 to 30 workshop participants

  • Three sites identified as high priority

  • 100+ people reached

  • Reports/incidents related to illegal collection (before/after)

  • Field surveys (transects, points, days)

  • Restoration of snake populations
